October/November Picapix Newsletter

It took until after this past weekend for me to find my inspiration for this newsletter.  The annual holiday of Halloween, celebrated each year on October 31st, has very interesting history with roots in age-old European traditions.  Originating from the Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in) of 2000 years ago, people lit bonfires and believed that wearing costumes would ward off ghosts.  The Celts lived in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France.  Nowadays we have borrowed from these traditions and dress up in costumes and masks.  Children go door-to-door in their costumes asking for candy by “Trick or Treating”, and the adults have also joined in on the fun with masquarade parties or dressing up to accompany their kids on that evening.  After numerous years of partaking in costume-wearing, my favorite costumes have been the ones which I had to spend time in creation of them and their accessories.  That was my fun – creating humorous costumes!  And then wearing them was the chance to portray that character, even more fun.  I can fully understand why so many of us claim that Halloween is our favorite festival/holiday of the year!  For more on the history, click on History of Halloween.
