November – Alzheimer Disease Awareness Month

November is Alzheimer Disease Awareness Month in the U.S. and possibly other countries.  In Canada it is during the month of January and we celebrate Awareness Day on Sept. 21st.  When I published my first book of picapix puzzles, I made a life-long commitment to donate $1 to the Alzheimer Society of Calgary for every book I sell.  The connection is simple, solving these puzzles is an excellent brain activity and one of the many ways we can aim to keep it healthy.  Just like exercise is good for our muscles, thinking is good for our brains.  I don’t claim that solving puzzles will absolutely prevent dementias, just that they provide a great way to keep your neurons firing, which in turn may improve your brain health and delay early onset of disease.

Speaking of books, I found a great online resource for books at the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Weekly.  I was very impressed with the collection of books covering every aspect from caregiving to the experiences of patients, shedding light, awareness, knowledge and understanding of this mental health issue.
